Quilt Care

How to care for quilts.

Washing:

1. Use a gentle quilt soap or mild detergent. Orvus and Ivory have been suggested.
2. Use only cold or warm water temperatures.
3. If you are using a washing machine, make sure it is large enough to hold the quilt without too much abrasion. Gentle or no agitation will be kindest to the fibers. Use the gentler spin cycle also.
4. If you prefer not to use a washing machine, soak the quilt in a tub of soapy water for up to 45 minutes and then rinse repeatedly to remove ALL soap or detergent.
5. Check with a reputable dry cleaners if you have special concerns about uncommon fabrics.

Drying:

1. If you are using a dryer to get the quilt started drying, use low heat on the permanent press or delicate setting. Do not leave the quilt in the dryer very long. Remove the quilt while it is still somewhat damp and spread it out as flat as possible to finish drying.
2. If you prefer not to use a dryer, lay the damp quilt on a large old bedspread and lightly pull the quilt flat. Make sure there is good enough air circulation to dry the quilt, (add a fan when in doubt). Avoid hanging a wet quilt over a clothesline without adding support because the quilt’s weight can cause threads to break at the point the line touches the quilt. Adding a supporting bedspread under the quilt and then hanging it on multiple, closely spaced clotheslines is one option.

Storing:

1. The best place to store a quilt is on a bed! Stack them up! It is good to switch them around!
2. If a bed is not an option for storage, gently fold and roll the quilt so it can be stored wrapped in cotton.
Wrapping a quilt in an old sheet is one option. Smaller quilts can be stored in a pillowcase. Every few months, unwrap the quilt and let it air out. Fold and roll in a different manor to store the quilt again.
